Great Sphinx of Giza

Local nameأبو الهول
LocationGiza, Egypt

This stupendous 73 m long and 20 m tall limestone statue seems to watch over the pyramids of Giza. It is the largest and the oldest colossal statue in the world and it is considered to be the symbol of Egypt - it often appears on stamps and coins.

The origin of the monument is entangled with mystery - some archaeologists say that it was constructed in the 4th Dynasty by Pharaoh Khafre (whose face it should also represent), but some believe it was built much earlier.
