Red Light District

Local namede Wallen
LocationCentrum, Amsterdam, Netherlands

The biggest and oldest of Amsterdam red light areas is not known only for prostitution. There are also many bars, clubs, coffee shops, sex shops and even sex museums located there.

The place got its name from the red neon lights and lamps that are used in most windows behind which there are individual sex workers offering their services. Do not try to take pictures of the women, though, it is strictly forbidden.

The existence of the red light districts in Amsterdam dates back to the 14th century. For some time throughout its existence, married and religious men were banned from entering the De Wallen area. Today, it is one of Amsterdam’s popular attractions.

The lively nightlife goes hand in hand with the nature of the area. There are many clubs, pubs and bars that you can visit and have fun all night. Therefore the best time for visiting the district, if you wish to see it lit up and alive, is during the evening or at night.
