Carmo Convent

Local nameIgreja do Convento de Santa Maria do Carmo
LocationSanta Maria Maior, Lisbon, Portugal

Completed in the 15th century, this large convent with an ornate interior is a burial site of several members of the Portuguese royal family. Even though it was ruined during the 1755 earthquake, you can still walk through the remnants of what used to be the largest church in Lisbon.

Nowadays, the former main altar of the church houses a small archaeological museum in which you can explore various historical artefacts, including Gothic tombs, statues, and mainly Moorish azulejos. Azulejos are traditional Spanish and Portuguese coloured ceramic tiles that were used to decorate interiors.

Carmo Convent is located only a short walk from Santa Justa Lift.
