Column of Phocas

Local nameColonna di Foca
LocationCampitelli, Rome, Italy

This column is the last monument to be added to the forum. Today, it is also one of the last monuments still standing.

The column is 13.6 metres tall, and it was constructed in 608 at the orders of the Roman pope when he wished to honour the Byzantine king Phocas. Unfortunately, we cannot really say for sure what was the purpose of this gesture today. We do know, however, that its recipient, Phocas, did not to get to enjoy it for too long. He died but two years later, overthrown by an insurrection.
