St. Peter's Church

Local nameSt. Peter
LocationAltstadt, Zurich, Switzerland

Wherever you're standing in the Zurich's old town, you can't miss the largest clock face in Europe. It is the greatest pride of this church, with a diameter of almost 9 meters. The church, standing on the south bank of river Lemmat, is one of the four main churches in Zurich. When visiting, do not miss the chance to look inside the church as well, since the interior is beautifully decorated by painted murals in the Baroque style.

The location on which the church stands has a long history as a place of worship. It is here, that once stood a Roman temple to the god Jupiter. After the Romans left, it fell into disuse, however, in the 8th or 9th century AD a new, Christian church was erected here. This is the church which was later, in 1706, reconstructed and consecrated as the first Protestant church and that you can see today.

The church is still in active use and hosts a number of events, including concerts.
