The square has a rich history - it served as the commercial center of the Roman Florentia and then as a food market during the Middle Ages. The site of the Roman forum is marked by the Column of Abundance.
The current square was created in the 19th century when Florence became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy and the town council decided to rebuild the historical center of the city. Although the capital was then moved to Rome, Florence continued with the redevelopment plans.
As part of the project, a triumphal arch was erected here with an inscription referring to the redevelopment. There are also many historical cafés where famous Italian artists regularly met.
