The Roman Catholic cathedral which was finished in 1939 is supposedly the largest church ever built in Australia.
The cathedral has a connection with the Irish community, which has played a significant part in Melbourne's history. The cathedral is dedicated to the patron saint of Ireland and there is also a statue of Irish political leader Daniel O'Connell.
