Schönbrunn Palace Gardens

Local nameSchlosspark Schönbrunn
LocationVienna

These breath-taking Baroque gardens will enchant you with their extensiveness and splendour. They cover approximately 120 hectares of land around the Schönbrunn Palace and are listed by UNESCO among the World Heritage sites. Take a stroll through the carefully designed flowerbeds, or get lost in the local maze.

First entered by visitors in 1779, these gardens have a long history. Though it is documented that there used to be an estate on them as early as the Middle Ages, the gardens as we see them today were created under the rule of Maria Theresa in the 18th century.

The complex does not include only the gardens, though. You can visit a zoo, which has been open for over 250 years now, explore a fake Roman ruin, or go admire the exotic plants in the palm house, desert house, or the botanic garden. There is even a Carriage Museum. Just keep in mind, that although the entrance to the gardens in general is free of charge, some of these attractions can only be entered for an additional fee. It is also forbidden to bring dogs into the park.
