Pont des Arts

Local namePont des Arts
LocationParis, France

Also known as “Passerelle des Arts”, this 20th-century pedestrian bridge is a popular place for both tourists and locals. It offers great views over the city and it has also appeared in several movies.

Its existence dates back to the beginning of the 19th century when a bridge was built here under the rule of Napoleon I. The original bridge collapsed after World War II and a new one was finished in 1984 (following the original plans). In 1991, it became part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Tourists used to attach padlocks to the bridge to express their love for each other. In 2008, the city started to cut off the love locks because the weight was actually damaging the structure of the bridge and suggested that tourists take selfies instead. Unfortunately, since new padlocks were still appearing, the Mayor's Office was forced to cover the railings with padlock-proof glass panels.
