This beautiful 9th-century temple is often missed. It was built by the rulers of Khmer empire and for some time it also served as the official state temple of King Indravarman I.
From the shape of the temple, you can see that there has been a cultural exchange between the Khmer kingdom and Java because Bakong looks very similar to a temple in Java called Borobudur.
Marvel at the detailed carvings on the bas relief. There are also plenty picture-taking opportunities in the temple's surroundings.
