If you find yourself walking around the Colosseum, take the time to visit these baths as well. Originally called thermae by the ancient Romans, they have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980.
The Baths of Caracalla were the city's second largest public bathhouse at the time of their construction in the 2nd century AD. No wonder, as they used to span over an area of more than 100 000 square meters. Even today, they belong among the most imposing ruins in Rome.
