Martin Place

Local nameMartin Place
LocationSydney, Australia

Located in the very heart of Sydney, this busy boulevard interconnects other parts of the city. It has always been an important part of Sydney, as there used to be a General Post Office with telegraphic cables on this street, and all important information about world affairs arrived here first.

This pedestrian mall has a high concentration of banks, shops, boutiques, restaurants and everything a hopeful shopper needs. There are also plenty of historical buildings, the Commonwealth Bank, and physical mementos like the 1927 World War I ANZAC Cenotaph, a monument built in honour of people who are buried elsewhere.

Martin place is also tied to a tragedy, which happened here in 2014, called the Sydney siege. Several customers and employees of the Lindt chocolate café were held hostage and some of them were killed by a gunman. In memory of this tragic event, people set up beautiful flower decorations all over the place.
