The largest and most important Orthodox church in Athens was completed in 1862 and now serves as the seat of the Bishop of Athens. Important political ceremonies, as well as weddings and funerals, take place here.

The body is richly decorated with vivid Byzantine-style frescoes. Also, there are tombs of two saints killed by Ottoman Turks.
