St. Charles's Church

Some say this is the most beautiful church on the northern side of Alps. Built in the Baroque style, its breathtaking exterior continues to amaze visitors since its completion in 1737. Do not miss the chance to explore the church's interior too, though. After admiring the magnificent frescoes and decorations, you can climb the 236 feet high dome, which offers a great view of the city.

Notice the Roman and Greek elements in the church's design. The two columns with spirals on both sides of the entrance are inspired by the famous Trajan's column, while the entrance itself is modelled after Greek porticos.

It is said that Emperor Charles VI ordered the construction of this church out of gratefulness after a prayer he made was answered. It is dedicated to another Charles, the sainted Bishop of Borromeo, who lived in the 16th century.

Concerts of classical music take place here, mostly on Fridays and Saturdays. Especially popular is the Requiem by the Austrian genius composer Mozart.
