World War II Memorial

Local nameWorld War II Memorial
LocationWashington, United States

The memorial commemorates the American soldiers and civilians who in some way took part in World War II. It was opened for public in 2004 by President Bush and has been a popular sight ever since.

The memorial consists of 56 pillars (one for each US state that existed in 1945, and one for each of the US territories), two triumphal arches and a fountain in the middle of the plaza. There is also a Freedom Wall with stars that mark those killed in the war (each star stands for a hundred killed people).

The memorial is located between Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial. On days when the weather is nice, the place might get quite busy. However, the stroll from one monument to the others is definitely a nice way to relax and enjoy the important Washington sights.
