Theatre of Marcellus

Although smaller than the Colosseum, this theatre served as its predecessor, and the architects of Colosseum got inspired by the shape and overall structure of this building.

It used to be the largest and the most important theatre in the old Rome. Its building process started during the reign of Julius Caesar, but was finished by Augustus in circa 13 BC. It could take in an unbelievable number of spectators - somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000.

Later, it was transformed into a fortress, and then into a luxurious palace for the Savelli family. Today, the top level is converted into apartments for guests.

Most of the building is not open to the public, but you can still adore it from outside. The theatre is a short walk away from the Teatro Marcello bus stop.
