Tian Tan Buddha Statue

Local name天壇大佛 Tian Tan Buddha Statue
LocationNgong Ping, China

Also called the Big Buddha, this 34-meters-tall statue is one of the largest seated Buddhas in the world. Built in 1993, it has been enjoying immense popularity both as a place of religious pilgrimage and a favorite tourist spot ever since.

If you climb the nearly 270 steps and reach the statue, you can admire the detailed artistry of the Buddha's hands, clothes or face. Each of these parts was designed with a specific symbolical purpose - they are meant to evoke the qualities that Buddha has, like wish fulfillment or compassion.

When planning your trip here, remember to check the weather forecast beforehand. The elevated location of the statue offers amazing and impressive views of the entire surrounding area, but if it is misty, you may have trouble even seeing the Buddha himself.

Also, check whether the cable car providing rides to and from the statue is operational before your trip. If not, you can still get to the Buddha by taxi or take a bus, but you may encounter some difficulties finding a seat or spend a long time waiting in queues.
