Gellért Baths

This majestic spa is one of the main reasons Budapest was nicknamed "Spa City" in 1934. It is probably the most famous Art Nouveau spa, not only in Budapest, but also in the entire Europe, enjoying an extreme popularity with the tourists. No wonder - the lavish complex with 118 natural thermal springs is like nothing you've ever seen before.

It all started with a spring that was said to possess magical properties. The Turkish chroniclers have documented it spurting from the area as early as the 17th century. Two hundred years later, in 1918, the Gellert Bath as we know it finally opened here.

Today, the bath consists an outer, as well as an inner section, with geothermal pools, massages, saunas, and more. Just keep in mind that if you wish to visit the swimming pool, you have to bring a swimming cap (or buy one at the entrance).

As it tends to get quite crowded during the weekends due to its popularity, it may be more prudent to visit the spa on a weekday. You can take a look at the main hall free of charge.
