The castle was built in the 13th century by the Knights Templar on the site of an old Moorish citadel. Antipope Benedict XIII, known as el Papa Luna, moved here in 1411 and turned the castle into his residence and a library.
Standing at 64 meters above sea level, the castle offers magnificent views of the old town and the coastline. You can also recognize it as one of the Game of Thrones filming locations.
