Split Mound Cave

Local nameRaufarhólshellir
LocationIceland

Located near the town of Thorlakshofn, this lava tube is often decorated with ice, thanks to the cold air that gets trapped in here. Formed approximately 4600 years ago, this cave is the fourth longest one in Iceland. It is more than 1300 meters long and locals say that to get the most of this experience, it is best to walk all the way to the very end of the cave. The lava formations are simply exceptional.

It is now accessible with guided tours only and the standard tour takes about 55 minutes in the tunnel. It's recommended to book in advance to ensure your place and time. The extreme tour is usually around 2,5 to 3,5 hours in the tunnel and it is necessary to book ahead. Also, please note that it is suitable for people in good physical condition.

No special equipment is necessary but always bring good hiking shoes. Also, bear in mind that it's cold in the tunnel and water may drip from the ceiling, so a waterproof jacket might come in handy.

To get there, take road no. 39 (Þorlákshöfn) and drive for 12 km. You should see the parking lot right by the road.
