Saint Peter's Cathedral

Local nameSt. Petri-Dom
LocationMitte, Deutschland

This church is located right in the centre of Bremen and it contains a mixture of different architectural styles. The building is originally a medieval building, but it has been rebuilt and reconstructed many times, therefore the central nave and the choir are in Gothic style, whereas the interior was repainted in a Neo-Byzantine style.

There is an interesting tradition connected with this cathedral. Men who are older than 30 and still not married should have a duty of cleaning the steps of the cathedral. They are relieved of this duty once a young woman gives them a kiss. The same applies to young unmarried women, who are released from polishing the doorknobs in the cathedral only after they are kissed by a young man.
