The main temple of Korean Zen Buddhism is a majestic and elaborate building that is a treat for the eyes. It draws plenty of tourists who want to learn about Buddhist culture.
It was first built in 1395, but the modern building wasn't constructed until 1910 and the temple was moved to the current location only in 1937. During the Japanese occupation of Korea, it was known as Taegosa. The temple changed its name to Jogyesa after the liberation. It boasts a grand main hall with a statue of Shakyamuni Buddha.
Visit the grounds during festivals, such as Buddha's Birthday, an event taking place during May. There are several shops and stalls in the area selling Buddhist items where you can get some great souvenirs.
The temple grounds do not close, The Main Hall is open non-stop.
