Meteora

Local nameΜετέωρα
LocationGreece

This impressive complex of monasteries is one of the must sees in Greece. Looming from monumental rocks high above the ground, they are now a popular tourist attraction and a paradise for hikers.

In the 16th century, there were 24 Eastern Orthodox monasteries in total. Today, only six of them are still functioning. The Holy Monastery of St. Stephen and the Holy Monastery of Roussanou are home to a community of nuns and the remaining monasteries are occupied by monks.

The six monasteries are open to visitors and you are welcome to explore their architecture, museums and old religious items stored there. The whole area is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage sight.
