Palác slúži ako sídlo dánskeho parlamentu, ministerstva štátnej správy a najvyššieho súdu. Okrem toho slúžia niektoré jeho časti ešte i dnes kráľovskej rodine.
Prvý zámok na tomto mieste postavili už v 12. storočí, ten však vyhorel rovnako ako aj dva ďalšie zámky, ktoré tu postavili neskôr. Súčasný palác pochádza z roku 1928 a navrhli ho ako kráľovskú rezidenciu, hoci kráľ tu nikdy žil. Neobarokový sloh sa v ňom snúbi s neoklasicistickým štýlom.
Parlament sa nachádza v južnom krídle paláca a kráľovské komnaty, najvyšší súd a kanceláriu predsedu vlády nájdete v severnom krídle. Niektoré z miestností si môžete prezrieť počas komentovanej prehliadky. Rezervácia nie je potrebná. Určite neprehliadnite Veľkú sálu, najväčšiu spomedzi kráľovských komnát, ktorá sa pýši úchvatnými Kráľovninými tapisériami.

There is free entrance to the public galleries during parliamentary debates. Otherwise, the Parliament can only be visited with a guided tour.
