Wat Phra Kaew

Local nameวัดพระศรีรัตนศาสดาราม
LocationPhra Nakhon, Bangkok, Thailand

The most sacred Buddhist temple is located within the Grand Palace precincts. The construction started when King Rama I moved the capital to its present location in Bangkok in 1785. The holy buildings of the temple are beautifully decorated and contain statues and pagodas.

The temple takes its name after the statue of Buddha in a meditation pose carved from a jade stone. The statue is covered with a gold cloak which changes seasonally - the robe is changed for the summer, for winter and rainy seasons. This important ritual is performed by the King and it is supposed to bring good fortune to the country.

Unlike other temples, Wat Phra Kaew is not home to monks, it is rather used as a private temple for the royal family. Worship and ceremonies also take place here. Please dress appropriately and remove your shoes before entering the temple.
