The Wilhelma is a zoological-botanical garden in the Stuttgart district of Bad Cannstatt. With over one million visitors annually, it is one of the most visited zoological gardens in Germany. Today, Wilhelma shows around 11,000 animals from all over the world on about 30 hectares. With almost 1200 species, it is the second most species-rich zoo in Germany after the Berlin Zoological Garden with 1504 species. The botanical area presents about 8500 plant species from all climate zones of the earth. In addition to the publicly accessible garden, Wilhelma has a branch office, the Tennhof located in Fellbach, where, among other things, breeding stallions and bulls of various animal species are kept.
The zoological-botanical garden is embedded in a historicist castle complex built between 1846 and 1866. In the 1950s, it began to supplement the previously only botanical-historical garden with a scientifically managed zoo.
