Built tucked away in the mountains to let King Ludwig II be away from other people, this castle is not doing the job well after his death. With about 1.3 million visitors annually, it belongs to the most popular castles in the world. If the shape of it seems familiar to you despite never seeing it before, that's because the castle in Sleeping Beauty was inspired by this one.
It´s quite young, it was only built in 1882. The servants had battery-powered bells and the toilettes could flush automatically and they also had running warm water.
A part of the complex is the Marienbrücke, which offers an outstanding view of the surroundings and the forests. Do not miss out on it in any case (unless it's closed due to weather).
The hike up the hill takes about 40 minutes, but you can also take the horse carriage or a bus up. You need to leave your car in the village.
Bear in mind that you can only buy tickets in the village of Hohenschwangau below the castle. If you're visiting this place during peak season, reserve your tickets well in advance, because they get sold out pretty quickly.
