This historic marketplace was once a witness to many public executions - you can find a memorial commemorating the victims here. Grassmarket is also mentioned in Daniel Defoe's account of visiting Edinburgh in the 1720s.
Nowadays, this place has it all. Feeling hungry? Then hop into some of the many restaurants lining this square. They are serving both traditional Scottish dishes and international cuisine. It is also a popular area where to enjoy Edinburgh nightlife and where to shop.
Fancy visiting something unique? Grassmarket is home to the city's only cat cafe and to a famous joke shop.
Shops are usually open from 10 am to 5:30 pm.
