Built in 1959, the museum houses the art collection of Jim Thompson, an American businessman who traveled through Thailand and came up with the idea of establishing the Thai Silk Company Limited here in 1948.
Throughout his time in Bangkok, he collected historical Buddhist statues and traditional Thai paintings made of wood, cloth, and paper. He also brought some artworks from Burma, Cambodia and Laos.
