Khanty-Mansiysk is a city and the administrative center of Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Russia. It stands on the eastern bank of the Irtysh River, 15 kilometers from its confluence with the Ob, in the oil-rich region of Western Siberia. Though an independent city, Khanty-Mansiysk also functions as the administrative center of Khanty-Mansiysky District. It was known as Ostyako-Vogulsk until 1940.
Khanty-Mansiysk is one of the few administrative centers of a federal subject in Russia that is not the largest in the territory - the city of Surgut surpasses it in size within the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. Population: 80,151; 53,953; 34,462.
