Main Square

Local nameRynek Główny
LocationDzielnica I Stare Miasto, Kraków, Poland

The very centre of the city and one of the largest squares in Central Europe. This is where the country of Poland used to be ruled from until the capital city was moved to Warsaw.

The square does not have a town hall because it didn't survive to the present day. It's framed by historical houses, and almost all of the streets aiming out of the square are in right angle to the square itself. The main attractions here are the Cloth Hall, the intriguing Gothic Town Hall Tower, and the Basilica of the Virgin Mary.

It's a popular meeting space for locals and tourists, and if you're visiting in winter, you can look forward to annual Christmas Market, full of mulled wine, pleasant smells, souvenirs and food. If you come here during other seasons, you can still enjoy the square after sunset, when it's beautifully lit up.

There aren't many bus stops around this area, so your best bet is taking a train to Krakow Glowny and then walking for about 13 minutes, or getting to Krakow plac Jana Matejki bus stop, which is a few hundred metres closer.
