Matthias Church

Local nameMátyás-templom
LocationBudapest, Hungary

The 15th-century Gothic church is located in the Buda District, close to the imposing Fisherman’s Bastion. It is one of the iconic sights of Budapest. It was originally named after the Virgin Mary as “The Church of Our Lady” only to be renamed after King Matthias, who had the southern tower renewed, in the 19th century.

The main dominant of the church's interior is the beautiful main altar, with a sandstone pulpit decorated in Neo-Romanesque style. The sarcophagus of King Béla III (the 12th-century monarch) and his wife will also surely catch your eye. In the Loreto chapel, be sure to notice the statue of Madonna (a replica of the Italian original).

Before your visit, check the official website where you can see all the events organized in the church listed. You might want to take part in some, or you might find out that the church will be closed to the public due to some religious event. Also, since it is an active church, respectful behaviour is expected of all visitors.
