The seat of the autonomous Catalan government is one of the dominants of the Ciutadella Park. The building dates back to the 18th century when it was used as an arsenal and part of a citadel.
The citadel was demolished during the construction of the Ciutadella Park in 1869 and the arsenal was rebuilt as a royal palace. However, the King of Spain never used it and in 1932 it started to be used by the Parliament.
Although the palace was used again as barracks between 1939 and 1945, it was returned to the government once democracy was restored. Free guided tours are offered on weekdays in Catalan, Spanish, French and English. It is necessary to book in advance.
