Piazza Venezia

Local namePiazza Venezia
LocationRome, Italy

The square is located at the intersection of several important Roman boulevards (e.g. Via dei Fori Imperiali). It is close to the Roman Forum and the Trajan’s Forum. It got its name from the Palazzo Venezia, which is located there and which served as a Venetian embassy in Rome (before Italy was united).

The dominant of the square is the Altare della Patria – an enormous monument to the first king of Italy – Victor Emmanuel II. You can get to its top which serves as an observation deck and see the square from there. There are also several other palaces located there: Palazzo Generali or Palazzo Bonaparte (which belonged to Napoleon’s mother).

The square is usually very busy but definitely worth seeing. In the evening, it is lit up stunningly.
