It was through this 17th-century gate that the kings of France would return to Paris from religious services at the Basilica of Saint-Denis. It was built in order to celebrate Louis XIV. There are several other triumphal arches located in Paris (e.g. the iconic Arc de Triomphe or the smaller Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel).
