This solemn place commemorates a very important event in Balinese history: Mass suicide as a reaction to the Dutch invasion in 1906. The locals fought losing battles with the invading armies and decided to rather commit suicides than to surrender to the usurpers. The imposing monument and the surrounding park serves as a memorial to the dead.
