Šomoška Castle was built around the 13th-14th century as a protection from invasions of Tatars and later Turks. It held strong for 20 years, despite other castles being taken over by Turks. Eventually, it also fell into their hands till it was freed along with the rest of the area. It was passed from one noble family to the other, till its last owner refused to reconstruct it after a lightning strucka and burnt most of it down.
It was saved from decay at the end of the 20th century.
It's interesting to note that it belonged to both Slovakia and Hungary. Currently the village right underneath the castle is in Hungary, while the castle is in Slovakia.
It's advised to take a longer hike from the village of Šiatorská Bukovinka.
