The Maximilianeum

Local nameMaximilianeum
LocationMunich, Deutschland

Situated at the end of Maximilianstraße, this palace has been serving as the seat of the Bavarian State Parliament since 1949.

The construction of this grandiose architectural gem, built in Neo-Gothic style, had started in 1857 at the behest of King Maximilian II. Due to complications, it took nearly 20 years to finish it, with the works only ending in 1874. It was originally meant to become a home base for a foundation for gifted students.

The building as you see it today, however, is of a much younger date. Wings were added to the palace in 1958 and 1964 and much of it had to be rebuilt after the Second World War. Last additions were made in 2012.

If you have a bit of time to spare, go see the Maximilianeum during sunset or after nightfall. The building is especially magnificent illuminated by lights.
