This bridge is a dominant feature of Porto. It was built by Gustav Eiffel’s disciple Théophile Seyrig and features typical for Eiffel’s work can be spotted here as well.
The 395 m long bridge connects two banks of the river Douro and was the longest iron arch bridge in the world at the time of its construction.
The peculiarity of this bridge lies in its two decks – the upper deck shared by pedestrians and the metro and the lower one for road traffic, brave pedestrians and teenagers jumping into the river from it.
The bridge is part of the cultural heritage and it was also classified as a Property of Public Interest. If you want to walk on it, you can get off at the Jardim do Morro metro station (line D).
