Located on the Spree river in Berlin, this island is best known as the location of five important Berlin museums. Here you can find the Pergamon Museum (which includes Pergamon Altar or the Ishtar Gate), Bode Museum (focusing on Byzantine culture), Neues Museum (housing Ancient Egypt related exhibitions), Alte Nationalgalerie (presenting the 19th-century art) and the Altes Museum (which focuses on Ancient Greece).
Apart from the interesting exhibitions, even the buildings themselves and their architecture are worth noticing. The Altes Museum, the Neues Museum and the Alte Nationalgalerie were constructed in the second half of the 19th century while the Bode Museum and the Pergamon Museum were constructed in the first half of the 20th century.
The whole island with its museum complex is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1999.
