Palace of Tears

Local nameTränenpalast
LocationMitte, Berlin, Deutschland

Former train station and a crossing place between the East and West Germany. Citizens from the west part of the country were allowed to travel and this was the place where they said their goodbyes to their friends and family in the east. This place got its name due to the tears that were shed by Germans, who never knew whether it was the last time they had seen their loved ones or not.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, this place served as a nightclub and a stage until 2006. In 2011, an exhibition was set up, explaining the consequences and the daily life of those who were affected by this event in history. It displays various documents, artefacts, photos and recordings to commemorate the period of time that will hopefully never happen again.

Palace of Tears is situated a few metres away from Bahnhof Berlin Friedrichstraße, so you should have no problems getting here. It has no air conditioning, which can be a problem during the summer.
