The square has been the beating heart of the city for many centuries (since 1158). It got its name from the Marian column that is located in the middle of the square since 1638. The most imposing building to be found there is definitely the 19th century Neues Rathaus (New City Hall). There is also the 14th century Altes Rathaus (Old City Hall) located nearby.
For most of its existence, the square was at the centre of the cultural life of Munich (e.g. markets were organised there). Today, the square is still a lively place with crowds of tourists visiting it every day. It gets especially busy during Christmas, when there are the Christmas markets organised with plenty of gift shops and Glühwein shops.
