Il palazzo è la sede del Parlamento danese, del Primo Ministro e della Corte Suprema. Inoltre, alcune zone vengono ancora utilizzate dalla Famiglia Reale per diversi eventi e cerimonie.
Il primo castello venne costruito qui nel XII secolo, ma bruciò, cosa che fecero anche i due castelli successivi. Il palazzo attuale risale al 1928 e venne ideato come residenza reale, sebbene il Re non ci abbia mai vissuto. È un mix tra gli stili neobarocco e neoclassico.
Il Parlamento si trova nell'ala meridionale del palazzo, mentre gli Appartamenti Reali, la Corte Suprema e l'ufficio del Primo Ministro si trovano nell'ala settentrionale. Alcune parti del palazzo vengono aperte al pubblico con visite guidate, per le quali non è necessario prenotare in anticipo. Assicuratevi di visitare almeno la Sala Grande, parte degli Appartamenti Reali, dove potrete ammirare le tappezzerie della Regina.

There is free entrance to the public galleries during parliamentary debates. Otherwise, the Parliament can only be visited with a guided tour.
