Constructed as a part of an urban renewal project before the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, the port now represents one of the top tourist attractions in Barcelona with over 16 million people visiting it every year.

The area consists of museums, great seafood restaurants, Europe's largest aquarium, IMAX Port Vell and sports facilities. Wander along the Rambla de Mar to see Miraestels, a white human sculpture floating on the water and looking up to the sky. The port is also the largest cruise liner port in the Mediterranean.
